The International Council for Commercial Arbitration (ICCA), has elected Gabrielle Kaufmann-Kohler to be its President as of 1 April 2018. She holds the office of President-Elect until then. Prof. Kaufmann-Kohler was President of ASA – the Swiss Arbitration Association, from 2001 to 2005 .
Prof. Kaufmann-Kohler’s reputation in international arbitration is in a class of its own. Over the years, she has not only been active on ICCA’s governing body but has spearheaded numerous projects that have contributed to the global development of arbitration, and the specialisation and growth of its study as an academic pursuit. She founded and directs the Geneva LLM in international Dispute Resolution (MIDS), and is also a co-founder of the Foundation for International Arbitration Advocacy (FIAA). She has also been a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the LCIA, and the Board of the American Arbitration Association. She contributed to the drafting of the Code of Sports-related Arbitration, and to setting up the Arbitral Tribunal at the Olympic Games, which she chaired in Atlanta (1996), Nagano (1998) and Sydney (2000), as she chaired the Ordinary Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport from 1994 to 2001.
ASA President Elliott Geisinger had the following reaction to her election: “Gabrielle’s election as ICCA President is yet another tribute to one of the most outstanding figures in international arbitration. Her intellectual curiosity knows no bounds and she always seems to be one lap ahead of the rest of us. Her interests have covered many fields, and each of them, be it sports arbitration, investor-state arbitration or commercial arbitration, have benefitted hugely from her unparalleled capacity for hard work, her razor-sharp legal acumen and her visionary eye for future developments. Last but far from least, she is an example of independent-mindedness and integrity. Switzerland and indeed the whole arbitration community are very fortunate to have her."
Prof. Pierre Tercier, former President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and long-time ASA Board member, stated: "Gabrielle is not only an outstanding arbitrator, she is one of the main renowned authors and professors in the field. She has accomplished and contributed so much in preparing and promoting the young generation to enter into international arbitration, in particular the successful creation and running of the MIDS. For the international arbitration community, young and old, she is nothing but irreplaceable."
