ASA South-East Asia Chapter is Launching

05.06.2016 - The ASA Board has decided to create a South-East Asia Chapter, further to an opportunity to project its presence and activities in Singapore, a major dispute-resolution hub.

The purpose of the ASA South-East Asia Chapter is to serve and develop ASA and Swiss arbitration interests more broadly in the region, and will provide an operational base for ASA activities in the area, including civil law jurisdictions in particular.

Taking the role of Chapter Chair will be Julie Raneda, an active arbitration practitioner and ASA member who has recently moved to Singapore from Geneva with Schellenberg Wittmer Ltd.  ASA Board Member Michael Hwang SC, also based in the area, will act as Honorary Chapter Chair. We are fortunate and thankful to Michael and Julie for taking on these roles.

Whether ASA should have a presence outside Swiss borders has been the subject of consideration and discussion for some time within our association. In particular, it had been a past focus of the Marketing Committee’s work.

The ASA South-East Asia Chapter will begin operations with an event that will fittingly compare and contrast some approaches to arbitral procedure in Switzerland and the region, featuring a number of experts from varied backgrounds. The event is scheduled to take place in Singapore on 20 June 2016. More information will be available in the coming weeks.

The activities of the Chapter will be the subject of future reporting in this newsletter. Should you wish to get in touch with Julie Raneda with respect to the ASA South-East Asia Chapter's activities, you may do so at asa-sea@arbitration-ch.org.
